Jitterbug Jive: The Study of a Pony Doctor • The Doctor is Out

Having insomnia as usual

So, might as well talk a little bit about something important-ish in terms of my story.

I do a lot of research. I mean a LOT of research. Doctor Who, obviously, and My Little Pony are the main targets of my research, but I’m not going to talk about that because that’s obvious that I’m constantly watching episodes and reading the wikis there.

But here’s one more thing I’m constantly researching that I believe helps my art and story: I research horse behavior. Many of the postures the Doctor makes are actually accurate to a stallion’s behavioral signals. His ears, tail, and the way he holds his head are all thought of before I draw him.

Some of his personality is also taken from the behavior of young stallions. A lot of his actions are from a ‘primal’ instinct that he has from being turned into a pony. Behaviors he’s not used to nor knows how to quite control yet, basically. That includes temper and sexual behavior.

People keep saying “Well, the Doctor would never do that!” But they don’t really put into consideration that he is, in fact, an equine now and that he’s not exactly used to it or familiar with it. Yes, ponies have developed and evolved over time as sentient, human-like creatures in Equestria. But they’ve had a very long time to figure it out and the Doctor has only just started from scratch, trying to rebuild on traits and moods he’s not used to feeling.

He’s quite feral in attitude, actually.

Here’s a few horse facts and things I’ve dug up, and some comparison photos to show my drawing vs horse behavior patterns
